Go Japan! Festival at Brands Hatch: Drift Pro & Time Attack

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Go Japan! Festival at Brands Hatch, a celebration of Japanese culture and motorsport. The event was packed with action, from highly modified Japanese cars to thrilling competitions. A personal highlight was meeting Jimmy Broadbent, alongside experiencing the jaw-dropping Time Attack UK Championship and the spectacle of the Drift Pro Championship!

Meeting Jimmy Broadbent: The Sim-Racing Legend

For those unfamiliar with Jimmy Broadbent, he’s a popular British YouTuber and sim-racing star, known for racing from his humble shed setup, affectionately called “The Shed.” Over the years, he has built a massive following thanks to his down-to-earth personality and passion for motorsport. Recently, Jimmy has taken the leap into real-world racing, competing in series like the Praga Cup.

Meeting him at Go Japan! was a fantastic experience. Despite his rising fame, Jimmy was just as approachable in person as he is online. We chatted about his racing journey, from sim-racing to real-world motorsport, and how surreal the transition has been. As a fan who’s followed his career, seeing his success first-hand was both inspiring and motivating!

Time Attack UK: An Adrenaline-Packed Experience

One of the festival’s main attractions was the Time Attack UK Championship, and while I had heard of it before, this was my first time watching it live. For those who don’t know, Time Attack is a motorsport where drivers compete to set the fastest lap times on the circuit.

The Pro Category, in particular, was mind-blowing. The cars looked like they had been pulled straight from Pikes Peak—massive wings, insane aero setups, and blistering speeds. It was hard to believe these were once road-going vehicles! From Nissan GT-Rs to Subaru Imprezas and Mitsubishi Evos, the Pro cars were nothing short of extraordinary.

Watching these machines attack the famous Brands Hatch corners like Druids and Paddock Hill was incredible. The power, precision, and sheer noise as they flew by made every lap feel like a high-speed spectacle. It was motorsport at its finest.

Drift Pro Championship: Controlled Chaos

In addition to the Time Attack, Go Japan! also hosted the Drift Pro Championship, a stunning display of car control and style. Unlike Time Attack, where the focus is on precision and speed, drifting is all about maintaining control while sliding the car at extreme angles, often sideways through corners. It’s fast, loud, and visually thrilling.

Watching the Drift Pro competitors shred through the course with plumes of tyre smoke trailing behind was nothing short of mesmerising. Drivers maintained incredible control while pushing their cars to the edge of grip, sliding gracefully through corners in tandem battles. The sound of roaring engines, screeching tyres, and the smell of burning rubber added to the chaos.

For me, the drift battles were a great contrast to the precision of Time Attack. While both disciplines demand incredible skill, drifting requires a different kind of mastery—balancing on the very edge of control while making it look stylish!

A Day to Remember

The Go Japan! Festival at Brands Hatch was a perfect day for any motorsport fan. From meeting Jimmy Broadbent to witnessing the Time Attack UK Championship and the Drift Pro Championship, there was never a dull moment. The combination of precision lap times in Time Attack, controlled chaos in drifting, and the electric atmosphere of the event made it one to remember.

Marshalling added another dimension to the day, giving me a front-row seat to the action and reminding me just how much goes into making these events run smoothly.

If you’re a fan of Japanese cars, motorsport, or just love a high-energy event, Go Japan! is an experience you can’t miss. Make sure to mark your calendar for next year—you won’t regret it!
