Thrilling Day at American SpeedFest VII: NASCAR at Brands Hatch

As a motorsport fan, there are few things more exhilarating than the sound of a roaring V8 engine, the sight of sleek race cars speeding past at breakneck speeds, and the electric atmosphere of a racing festival. This year, I had the privilege of attending American SpeedFest VII at Brands Hatch, a weekend-long celebration of all things American motorsport, and despite the overcast skies, it was a thrilling experience.

The V8 Thunder: NASCAR Comes to Life

If you’ve never experienced a NASCAR event in person, you’re missing out on something truly extraordinary. There’s just something about the raw power of the V8 Chevrolet engines that commands your attention and rattles your bones. As the cars took to the iconic Brands Hatch circuit, the air was filled with the deafening roar of engines, a sound so loud you could feel it in your chest. It was the perfect counter to the gloomy weather overhead, creating a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

Despite the grey skies and occasional drizzle, the action on track was relentless. Watching these NASCAR beasts navigating the tight, technical turns of Brands Hatch’s Indy circuit was fascinating. Unlike the massive ovals in the United States, this compact circuit brought a different flavour to the race – one that required both precision and power. The drivers fought wheel to wheel, their cars thundering down the straights, tyres screeching as they manoeuvred through corners.

Meeting Jacques Villeneuve: A Motorsport Legend

As if the thrilling NASCAR action wasn’t enough, one of the highlights of the day was meeting Jacques Villeneuve, none other than the 1997 Formula 1 World Champion. Villeneuve, a legend in his own right, was actually competing full-time in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series! Seeing him in this setting was a surreal moment for me, considering his illustrious F1 career. You don’t often expect to see someone who’s conquered the pinnacle of open-wheel racing switching gears—quite literally—into the world of NASCAR.

Meeting him in person was an unexpected joy. Despite his years of success, Villeneuve was humble, approachable, and clearly excited about his NASCAR stint. It was clear that his passion for racing hadn’t diminished one bit. Chatting with him, I learned how much he appreciated the unique challenges of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, especially the close-quarters racing on tracks like Brands Hatch, where every corner counts.

Alon Day: A NASCAR Whelen Euro Series Powerhouse

As I soaked in the day’s events, I also had the chance to meet another NASCAR star, Alon Day. The three-time NASCAR Whelen Euro Series champion, Day has become one of the most dominant figures in European NASCAR racing. Watching him tear around the track with precision and power was mesmerising. His consistency and skill were evident in every lap, showing exactly why he’s earned such a reputation.

Meeting Alon Day was another highlight of the day. He was focused but friendly, eager to talk about his journey through the series and his love for the sport. I could sense his determination and drive, qualities that no doubt helped him secure multiple championships. Talking to him and hearing his insights into the technical aspects of NASCAR racing in Europe was fascinating.

The Perfect Motorsport Experience Despite the Weather

The overcast skies did little to dampen the spirit of American SpeedFest VII. If anything, the weather added an extra layer of drama to the racing action, with drivers having to adapt to slightly unpredictable conditions. From the rumble of the V8 engines to the excitement of close-quarters racing, it was an unforgettable day for any motorsport enthusiast.

Meeting Jacques Villeneuve and Alon Day was the cherry on top, a reminder of just how diverse and exciting the world of motorsport can be. Whether you’re a fan of F1, NASCAR, or anything in between, American SpeedFest is an event that brings together the best of racing in one adrenaline-fuelled package.

Brands Hatch may have been under a blanket of clouds, but for me, it felt like the sun was shining all day long.
